Where does the trip start?
We launch from Kleinbaai Harbour. This is the closest launch site to our dive locations.
What time does the trip start? When will we return?
Depending on the phase of the moon, which again effects the tides, we normally launch at 7h00. Saying that, during our summer season, we can launch as early as 5h30!
The duration of the trip is normally 3 hours – but – the time we spend on the ocean largely depends on the sharks. Sometimes the sharks appear very quickly and some times we have to wait up to an hour! It can happen that the weather conditions may change, in which case the Skipper has the authority to decide to return to shore for safety reasons.
What is chumming?
In order for us to attract the Sharks to the boat and the cage, and for you to observe these beautiful animals in their natural environment, we lure the Sharks with chum. Chum consists of minced meat, mashed sardines, fish oil and sea water. This smelly mixture will slowly drift away from the boat, creating the chum slick. This is a game of patience and luck.
Do I need to get into the cage?
Everybody will be given the opportunity to get in the cage, but the choice is up to you. Great White Sharks are surface feeders, and viewing from our observation deck is great and provides you with the opportunity to capture these amazing animals on camera.
Is diving gear provided?
All diving gear is provided including clean fresh towels.
ARE CHILDREN WELCOME ON THE BOAT AND ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DIVE?
Children of 10 years and older are allowed entering the cage, only if the parents accompany them. Legal guardians will be asked to sign on behalf of the children. Children are prone to seasickness and the result can be quick dehydration. Sea sick shuttles do operate, but can be very costly!
Is it safe?
Yes indeed! The South African cage diving industry is regulated by a Code of Conduct and regulations from MCM (Marine and Coastal Management) and DEAT – (Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism)!
WHAT IS THE DISTANCE FROM CAPE TOWN TO KLEINBAAI AND HOW LONG IS THE DRIVE?
The distance is 160km and this will take approximately 2 ½ hours.
DO YOU HAVE TRANSPORT FOR CLIENTS?
Yes, we can definitely organise transport to pick you up in the morning in Cape Town, drive you to Gansbaai, and drive you back to Cape Town after the dive. We will be able to assist you with accommodation.
WHAT WILL IT COST ME FOR A RETURN TRIP FROM CAPE TOWN AREA?
R350 return from Cape Town and R200 on collection you in Hermanus.

Yes, we do provide breakfast, snacks and bottled water onboard, and on return, a light lunch.
WHERE IS DYER ISLAND AND GEYSER ROCK?
Dyer Island and Geyser Rock are roughly 10 km from Kleinbaai harbor and it take about 20 minutes from time of launch to time of arrival.
WHEN IS THE HIGH/LOW SEASON FOR SHARKS?
The best time to dive is our colder months, from April to October. The predominant wind during our winter season is the north-western wind. Visibility is excellent and water is normally warmer (15 – 20 degrees Celsius of 59 – 68 degrees Fahrenheit). During this time, the Sharks normally hunt seals near Geyser Island and Geyser Rock.
During our summer months, September to March, the south-easterly decrease the water temperature to 10 – 15 degrees Celsius or 50 – 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Visibility is often limited, to 2 meters or less.
CAN I BRING ALCOHOL ON THE BOAT?
No alcohol is allowed on our vessel. Alcohol is probably the best sea-sickness inducer and is a near guarantee for seasickness.
SEASICKNESS?
The danger time to get seasick is during the waiting period until we get Sharks, as your mind wanders into boredom once the anticipation wears off. Do not think about it – convince yourself that you will be fine and forget about seasickness!
Stay outside the cabin, remain in the fresh breeze, and avoid the toilet. Keep your eyes on the horizon. Seasick tablets can be purchased at any pharmacy around the country.
Do you offer accommodation?
No we do not offer accommodation ourselves, but we do work closely with all the guest houses and hotels in the Overberg region as well as in Cape Town. We can make reservations on your behalf at any hotel or guest house of your choice.
How many people do you take on a trip?
Our boat is licensed to carry only 36 people (30 passengers & 6 crew members) and have enough room to move around freely on the boat. We can also offer you longer diving times as the bigger boats as well as individual attention to all our clients.
Why is shark activities better in winter than in summer?
Our water is warmer in winter and the visibility better. Winter is also the time when the sharks hunt more around the island for seals.
I don’t want to get in the cage, can I still see the sharks?
Seeing Great White Sharks from the boat is equally as good as getting in the cage. If you watch from our viewing deck, you will not be disappointed. You do not have to get into the cage and the choice remains yours. Everybody is given the opportunity to get into the cage if they wish.
Do I get a discount for only doing surface viewing without going into the cage?
No, unfortunately all our guests pay for the space on the boat, whether they remain on the boat or decide to go into the cage.
Do we require a license or diving experience?
No diving or swimming experience is needed. The cage is attached to the boat at all times and you will always be within arms’ length of White Shark Adventures’ very capable and experienced crew.
What else can we see at Dyer Island?
You will be able to see up to 60 000 cape fur seals, birdlife, penguins and whales from May to November. We also come across large groups of Common Dolphins on occasion.
When is the best time to see White Sharks?
May to October is the best time to see Great White Sharks, but you can see them all year round.
How cold is the water?
Generally 15-20ºC (in summer time it can however drop to below 10ºC) or 59-68º Fahrenheit
